In 1939, Forjas Taurus was established in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The company started as a manufacturer of small tools and kitchen utensils. Taurus came to produce their first handgun in 1941 based upon the popular designs by Smith & Wesson and Colt: Model 38101SO. While a major manufacturer in South America, Taurus grew when they purchased Beretta’s factory in Sao Paulo, along with the contract to supply to the Brazilian army in 1980. They began to develop the 9mm caliber PT92 and PT99 pistol.
While they had been distributing to the United States since 1968, Taurus became a true contender in 1984. During the Dallas, Texas S.H.O.T. Show, Taurus introduced its after-sale service policy that included a “Lifetime Repair” unlimited on all products. This marketing strategy drew the public to the quality of Taurus products and their service.
